PRIVATE AUSTIN L. GROVE

Private Grove was born here in Glen Rock in 1892 and graduated valedictorian from the Glen Rock High School in 1903.  He also graduated from F. and  M. College in 1913.  He then became principal of the Terre Hill, Lancaster County High School, and later a member of the F. and M. College faculty where he taught at the time he entered the Army.  He left for Camp Meade, MD, in May 1918, and was attached to the 313th Infantry at the time he landed in France in July of the same year.  He was engaged in the battle of “Mont Faucon”, where he met his unfortunate death.  A large memorial service was held in his honor on November 25, 1918 in Glen Rock.  He was a member of the Assistant Worker’s Bible Class and of Friends Lodge No. 287 K. of P.

HISTORY OF AUSTIN L. GROVE POST 403

On November 20, 1919 a meeting was held by the 35 charter members of Post # 403, at the Glen Rock Hose and Ladder Company.   During this meeting a motion was made and carried to name this organization in honor of Austin L. Grove who lost his life September 28, 1919 in France.  Dues were set at $1.00 per year on January 2, 1920 and a room was rented to hold meetings in the Hose and Ladder Company for $50.00 per year.

A Firing Squad was formed on May 7, 1920 and on May 31, 1920 the first Memorial Day Service was sponsored by Post 403.  During a meeting on June 4th 1920, a decision was made to make application for a permanent American Legion charter for the Post. And on August 1, 1920 Austin L. Grove Post 403 became an official American Legion.

The first building for American Legion Post 403 was purchased from Howard and Eva Rohrbaugh on March 31, 1945.  The address for this building was on 3032 Hanover Street.

This home was paid for by selling bricks for $10.00  These bricks were sold to local residence whose Sons, Daughters, Fathers, Husbands Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins were serving in World War II and to others who were already veterans from other wars.  This initial fund raising effort helped make the down payment to buy this building.

The Post moved to our current location at 4035 Manchester Street on August 30, 1995.  And on August 12, 1995 the Post celebrated its 75 Anniversary as an American Legion.
